LIBRARIAN'S VERDICT

A fascinating liquid history lesson. It is remarkably different from modern, heavily-aged ryes, prioritizing the honest character of the grain above all else.

The Library Note

In 1799, George Washington's distillery was the largest in the United States, producing 11,000 gallons of rye whiskey. Lost to history after his death, the distillery was reconstructed in 2007, and today, scholars and distillers use his original ledgers to recreate the recipe exactly as he made it.

Fresh corn, raw grain, and a heavy yeastiness—reminiscent of freshly baked rye bread.

THE PALATE

Surprisingly soft with a honeyed wheat sweetness and a sharp, peppery rye finish.

THE FINISH

Short and clean with a mild oatmeal-like aftertaste.
