LIBRARIAN'S VERDICT

The definitive Islay malt. It is a slow, powerful, and deeply rewarding spirit that rewards patience. If you only ever buy one smoky whisky, let it be this one.

The Library Note

Estimated to have begun distillation as early as 1742, Lagavulin is located on the edge of a rocky bay on the Isle of Islay. It is famous for its slow distillation process—the slowest of any Islay malt—which gives it a characteristic richness and oily texture that has earned it a cult following worldwide.

Sommelier's Perspective

THE NOSE

Intense peat smoke with iodine and seaweed, balanced by a rich, deep sweetness and dry hay.

THE PALATE

A tidal wave of smoke and thick malt, giving way to dried dates, figs, and a touch of sea salt.

THE FINISH

A massive, elegant, peat-filled finish with a surprising sweetness and a linger of Lapsang Souchong tea.
