LIBRARIAN'S VERDICT

It tastes like a hospital fire in a good way. It is the ultimate test for the Islay fan—a liquid that demands total respect and offers a complexity that few other spirits can match.

The Library Note

Founded in 1815, Laphroaig's character is derived from its own peat bogs on Islay, which contain a high proportion of moss and seaweed. It is the only whisky to carry a Royal Warrant from HRH The Prince of Wales (now King Charles III), a testament to its unique and uncompromising character.

Sommelier's Perspective

THE NOSE

Huge peat smoke, iodine, seaweed, and a surprising underlying sweetness.

THE PALATE

A medicinal explosion of seaweed, salt, and intense peat, giving way to hints of vanilla and cardamom.

THE FINISH

Long, warming, and intensely smoky with a lingering sea-salt snap.

THE PERFECT SERVE

The 'Medicinal' Dram: Serve neat with a pipette of spring water on the side. Add water drop by drop until the 'oily' texture opens up, revealing notes of vanilla and black pepper hidden behind the smoke.
