LIBRARIAN'S VERDICT

The bartender’s secret weapon. While high-end ryes get the glory, Old Overholt remains the most reliable 'workhorse' rye in the world—a spirit with enough history and heat to command respect in any cocktail.

The Library Note

Founded in 1810 by Abraham Overholt in West Overton, Pennsylvania, this is America's oldest continually produced whiskey brand. It was famously the preferred drink of Doc Holliday and Ulysses S. Grant. Today, it represents the archetypal 'Monongahela' style of rye—bold, citrusy, and unpretentiously spicy.

Sommelier's Perspective

THE NOSE

Spicy and bright. Aromas of fresh rye bread, apple peels, and a hint of dusty warehouse oak.

THE PALATE

Light but punchy. Flavors of black pepper and baking spices are balanced by a subtle caramel sweetness and a touch of herbal spearmint.

THE FINISH

Clean and dry with a lingering tingle of cinnamon and bitter orange.

Sensory Profile

THE PERFECT SERVE

The 'Classic Manhattan': 2 oz Old Overholt, 1 oz sweet vermouth, 2 dashes Angostura bitters. Its high-rye spice is the perfect anchor for the vermouth's richness, creating the specific 'bite' that defined the pre-prohibition era.

Composition

Malted Barley
Corn
Rye
Spring Water

EXPERT TECHNIQUE

A mash bill of at least 51% rye, column-distilled and matured for four years in charred American oak. Recent updates have moved it to a non-chill filtered process to maintain its robust texture.
