LIBRARIAN'S VERDICT

The gateway amaro. It is accessible enough for beginners but complex enough for experts. Its role in the Black Manhattan alone cements its place in the cocktail hall of fame.

The Library Note

In 1868, the Benedictine monks of San Spirito Abbey in Caltanissetta gifted their secret recipe to their benefactor, Salvatore Averna. It became the official supplier to the Italian royal household. Unlike the sharp alpine amaros of the north, Averna reflects the warmth of the south, full of citrus and sweetness.

Sommelier's Perspective

THE NOSE

Warm and inviting. Aromas of cola, orange peel, licorice, and vanilla.

THE PALATE

Thick and coating. A rich sweetness of molasses and caramel is balanced by gentle notes of sage, rosemary, and bitter orange.

THE FINISH

Medium-length with a sweet herbal fade.
