LIBRARIAN'S VERDICT

The ultimate acquired taste. It is polarising, aggressive, and absolutely essential. Once you grow to love its mentholated bite, no other amaro will ever feel quite as satisfying.

The Library Note

Created in Milan in 1845 by Bernardino Branca, Fernet was originally marketed as a medicinal tonic. Its recipe, which includes saffron from Iran and galangal from India, remains a family secret. It has evolved from a digestive aid into a global cult phenomenon, particularly in San Francisco and Argentina.

Sommelier's Perspective

THE NOSE

Medicinal and bracing. Powerful aromas of peppermint, licorice, and damp earth, with a hint of citrus peel.

THE PALATE

A shock to the system. Intense herbal bitterness is dominated by menthol, chamomile, and bitter orange, with a thick, syrupy mouthfeel.

THE FINISH

Long, cooling, and remarkably clean, leaving a persistent minty freshness.

THE PERFECT SERVE

The 'Fernet & Cola': 2 oz Fernet-Branca topped with cola over plenty of ice. This is the unofficial national drink of Argentina, where the cola's sweetness perfectly tames the amaro's aggressive bitterness.
