LIBRARIAN'S VERDICT

An unpretentious American icon. While it's a liqueur, not a straight whiskey, its technical balance of fruit and spice makes it one of the most versatile and historically important spirits in the cocktail cabinet.

The Library Note

Created in 1874 by bartender Martin Wilkes Heron at McCauley's Tavern in New Orleans, Southern Comfort was a solution to the harsh whiskies of the time. By infusing the spirit with a secret blend of peaches, oranges, and spices, Heron created a drink that captured the soul of the Crescent City. Today, under the ownership of Sazerac, it has returned to using real whiskey as its base spirit.

THE NOSE

Rich and sweet with notes of ripe peaches, jammy citrus, and honeyed spice.

THE PALATE

THE FINISH

Sweet and warming with a lingering fruit syrup note.

THE PERFECT SERVE

The 'Comfort & Cola': 2 oz Southern Comfort, top with cold cola and a large squeeze of lime. The lime's acidity is essential to cut through the liqueur's fruit-forward sweetness.
