LIBRARIAN'S VERDICT

The ultimate summer apéritif. While technically a fortified wine, its cultural status and essential role in the martini family make it an indispensable citizen of the spirits world.

The Library Note

Founded in 1872 in Podensac, Lillet is a blend of 85% Bordeaux wines (Sémillon and Sauvignon Blanc) and 15% handcrafted fruit liqueurs. Originally known as 'Kina Lillet' for its quinine content, it was immortalized by Ian Fleming in the 'Vesper' martini recipe for James Bond.

Sommelier's Perspective

THE NOSE

Bright and floral. Scent of orange blossoms, fresh honey, and a hint of minty pine resin.

THE PALATE

Crisp and refreshing. Flavors of candied orange and exotic fruits are underpinned by a subtle, wine-like acidity.

THE FINISH

Clean, light, and remarkably dry with a faint, pleasant bitterness from the quinine.

THE PERFECT SERVE

The 'Vesper Martini': 3 oz Gin, 1 oz Vodka, 0.5 oz Lillet Blanc. Shaken over ice until ice cold. This replaces the usual dry vermouth with Lillet's fruitier, more floral profile.

EXPERT TECHNIQUE

Bordeaux wines are blended with fruit liqueurs made from sweet and bitter oranges. The blend is then aged in oak vats for several months to allow the flavors to integrate.
